Israel War of Independence - Operation Horev (Ayin) (1948-1949)

The Arab-Israeli War:  Operation Horev

Operation Horev took place in late December, 1948 during the latter phases of Israel's War of Independence. It was designed as a full-scale attack that would be launched against the Egyptian forces in the Western region of the Negev desert. The objective was clear: trap the Egyptian army in the Gaza Strip. The outcome was even more clear: the complete surrender of a very confused Egyptian army. In fact, the Israeli military found itself on the verge of a complete capture of the Sinai peninsula before being ordered to stand down and withdraw by then Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. This came in response to an ordered cease-fire by the UN Security Council on December 29th of that year.
