Map of Ancient Israel during the time of the Philistines

Israel's arch-nemesis to the South

The Philistines (1175 B.C.) were widely considered to be the arch-enemies of Israel. They were not native inhabitants of the land, but were sea invaders originating from the Isle of Crete. The Bible depicts them as having control of five city states situated on the southwestern coastal plains of Israel. These were the city-states of Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath, Ashdod, and Ekron. Originating from the Aegean Sea, the Philistines were not part of the native semitic, Cannanite population. Many inaccurate portrayals of history show the Philistines as having given birth to today's "Palestinians", a supposition which is both demographically and geographically false.
