Map of Judea in the Maccabean Kingdom of Alexander Jannaeus

Alexander Jannaues aka King Yannai

Alexander Jannaeus was the king of Judea from approxmiately 103-76 B.C. Also known as King Yannai, he was known for his intense conflict with the party of the Pharisee. He is credited with the expansion of the Hasmonean Kingdom and establishing the city of Gamla in the year 81 B.C. as the capital of what we now know as the Golan Heights. With an army of mercenaries behind him, Alexander Jannaues conquered the entire coastal plains of western Israel, Western Samaria and the Galilee region. Of particular note was an intense battle in the Gaza region where he emerged victorious. The impressive victory helped to facilitate Judean control over the Mediterranean trade routes. He was ultimately defeated in the northern city of Acre.
