Map of the Babylonian Invasion of Israel and Captivity

God uses the Babylonians as instruments of His Will

For their sins of idolatry and rebellion against Him, God used the Babylonian empire as the instrument of his judgment. Between 607-586 B.C., Jews were deported to Babylon on several occasions and placed into captivity under King Nebuchadnezzar II. Their period of captivty lasted 70 years, and in 538 B.C., King Cyrus of Persia allowed the Jews to return to Israel and begin rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem, which had been utterly destroyed, along with Jerusalem, during the Babylonian invasion. While the Old Testament books of 2 Chronicles and 2 Kings tell the story of the destruction of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar and the beginning of the Babylonian captivity, the books of Jeremiah, Daniel, and Ezekiel comprise the story's prophetic elements and fulfilment. God's divine plan served its purpose, as the Jews, following their release from captivity and return to Israel, returned to Him -- the one who delivered them from the hands of their enemies.
