Map of Ancient Canaan (Israel, Palestine) during the reign of King Saul

Israel's First King

The main and thorough account of the life of Saul is portrayed in the books of Samuel, found in the Old Testament. Saul was the first established king of Israel and Judah -- a united Israel. Through divine revelation from God, Samuel annointed Saul as king in 1026 B.C. Known not only for his height and good looks, Saul was unfortunately known for his disobedience, as he consistently failed to carry out the commands and instructions from God. For this reason, he would rule as king of Israel for only two years before the throne would be passed to David. Saul died shortly after the Battle of Gilboa, a Philistine defeat of the Israelites, by falling on his own sword intentionally after his armor bearer refused his request to kill him.
