Map of Israel during the time of Jesus Christ

The Holy Land during the time of Jesus Christ (Yeshua)

For thousands of years, the Jewish people became accustomed to rule under foreign leaders and commands (Assyria, Babylon, Egypt, Persia, Greeks and Romans). During the time in which Jesus Christ walked the land of Israel, Romans ruled this area commonly referred to as Palestine, but biblically and historically documented as Israel. It was here that Jesus was born and lived His life. The Roman hierarchy of rule during the time of Jesus formed different levels through which authority flowed. During the time of Jesus Christ, the Jews were self-governed on a very local level (Pharisees and Sadducees), and they reported to King Herod. King Herod reported to the Roman outpost commander who reported directly to Rome.  At the time of the arrest of Jesus Christ, the outpost commander was Pontius Pilate.

During the time of Jesus Christ, the Jews understood that the world was divided between the Gentiles and the Jews, and they made it a priority not to associate with non-Jews. As such, they despised rule under the Roman empire, although they accepted it. The Gospel itself was intended to go "to the Jew first, and also the Greek".

During the time of Jesus Christ, Jewish authorities strived for the "purity" of their beliefs in the one true God, even in the face of foreign religions, such as that of the Romans. Even so, they found dissention amongst their ranks and fragmented into sects over variations of Jewish law.

Although born in Judea (Bethlehem), Jesus Christ spent a good portion of His life in and around the farmlands of Nazareth (He was often called "Jesus of Nazareth"), and most of Jesus' ministry was spent in the Galilee region, particulary the town of Capernaum.
