Map of Ancient Israel under the Maccabees

Israel under Maccabean Rule

The Maccabees (which means "Hammer" in Hebrew), originated from the family of Mattathias, which is also known as the Hasmoneans.  The Maccabees formed a rebellion in 167 B.C., seeking to liberate the Jewish people from the virtues of Hellenism and the Roman threat of forcing the Jews to abandon their belief in the one True God.  At the time, the Jewish tenets of keeping the Sabbath and circumcision had been outlawed Antiochus IV ruler of the Seleucid Empre.  After twenty years of revolt, the Maccabees were successful in restoring Jewish tradition in Judea.   The Jewish festival of Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the Temple following this Maccabee's victory over the Seleucids.
