Map of Jerusalem with Nehemiah's Reconstruction of Walls
(445 B.C.)

Nehemiah:  The Man Behind the Walls

Nehemiah is a rather unfamiliar figure in biblical history, meaning not many people know his story. However, few people were as instrumental in rebuilding Jerusalem, particularly its walls, following Israel's return from captivity in Babylon. Along with Ezra, Nehemiah played a big role in Jerusalem's restoration, as well as rededicating its people to the Lord. In approximately 445 B.C., Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem as the governor of Judah. After taking stock of the total damage laid upon the city during his infamous night journey around Jerusalem's walls (as depicted in Nehemiah 2), he repaired the walls, and all of its breaches, in relatively short order -- 52 days. The story of Nehemiah and that of his accomplishments is portrayed in the book of Nehemiah, as well as the book of Ezra. The two are generally read together as one contiguous book.
